William R. (Bill) Kumlin

Architect, AAA, AIBC, RAIC, SAA, MAA – Principal

Bill Kumlin is one of the founding partners of Kumlin Sullivan Architecture Studio.  He has been in the construction industry for over 35 years and as a registered architect for over 25 years.  He has been in private practice since 1998, 17 years before joining Barry Sullivan to form the Kumlin Sullivan Architecture Studio. Bill began his career as an architectural technologist before becoming an architect and still maintains a close connection to the technical side of the building industry, and the construction drawings required to communicate the designs to the contractor and his trades.  His main focus has been on small projects in the form of renovations, tenant improvements, building additions and upgrades.  He has worked in all sectors of the industry, but recently his focus his been on office and industrial clients.

Barry D. Sullivan
Architect, AAA, AIBC, RAIC, SAA, MAA – Principal

Barry Sullivan is one of the founding partners of Kumlin Sullivan Architecture Studio.  He has been in the architectural business for over 20 years.  He has been in private practice since 2015 when he joined with Bill Kumlin to form the Kumlin Sullivan Architecture Studio.
Barry began his career as an architectural technologist before becoming an architect and still maintains a close connection to the technical side of the building industry, and the construction drawings required to communicate the designs to the contractor and his trades.   His main focus has been on large scale projects and developments.  He has worked in all sectors of the industry, but recently his focus his been primarily on retail and industrial clients.


Alexa Collopy
Architect, AAA, AIBC – Senior Associate


Alexa is an Architect in the role of Project Designer.  She received a Bachelor of Arts Degree with Distinction in Art History with a Minor in Fine Arts from the University of Calgary in 2006.  She continued her studies at the University of Calgary, finishing with a Master of Architecture Degree in 2011.  Alexa’s focus at the firm is project design, from urban scale master planning to building design and interiors.  She also provides support to the partners and senior staff with project administration and construction documentation as required.  She enjoys the challenges that each project presents and is driven by a desire to combine pragmatics with interesting design on every project with which she is involved.

Oscar Cena

Architect, AAA - Senior Production Manager

Oscar comes to us from Argentina with additional historical building studies in Rome.  He is a registered architect with 30 years experience, most of which has been as Senior Technologist and Job Captain.
Oscar’s experience is varied touching hospitality, commercial, retail, residential (multi), with projects such as TDL offices, Canadian Tire West (Edmonton), London Place West Mall (numerous tenant fit-ups), Lethbridge Scotia Bank, South Bank Mixed Use, and the National Music Centre.  His experience as a contract administrator has allowed him to bridge the gap between document preparation and construction implementation on site.


Michael Knudsen
Intern Architect, AAA – Senior Project Manager

Michael has an extensive construction background that began while in high school as a plumber's assistant.  Most of his working career between 18 and 30 was spent in a variety of engineering and construction roles that included drafting, welding, concrete finishing, house framing, landscaping and cabinet making.  Since his graduation, his experience in and around architecture has included retail interior design, multi family resort master planning and unit design, custom home design and construction, graphic and web design, and movie and television set design. He has settled into a more normal architectural capacity with Kumlin Sullivan working primarily as a design and technical lead, and project manager for our firm.

Iris Li
B. Arch. Eng., LEEDTM– Senior Technician

Iris is a Intermediate Architectural Technologist at the firm. She brings in over 20 years of local and international architectural experience.  She graduated from Xi'an University of Architecture and Technology in China.  She is also a LEED Accredited Professional and has been practicing in Canada since 2001.  Iris has a broad cross section of project experience including retail, institutional, industrial, academic and multi-family.



Allan Falaminiano
B.S. Arch. – Intermediate Technician

Allan brings international experience to the team along with 9 years of experience in Vancouver and 6 more with us in Calgary.  Trained as an architect, his design sense works well to provide a designer’s eye when developing construction details.  He has been producing complete sets of construction drawings for small projects for 15 years and collaborates well with other team members on larger projects.


Sarah McPhee

Dip. A.T. – Intermediate Technician


After growing up in Nova Scotia, Sarah pursued a degree in Photography (11) and Architectural Drafting (16) from Nova Scotia Community College.  Sarah has worked across Canada, gaining experience in Northern Construction in the Yellowknife, before settling here in Calgary.  Sarah has always wanted to have a career where she could be creative while still making a positive impact on the lives of others – Her combined background of Photography and Architecture has allowed her to have just that!   



Julie-Anna Ly
Dip. A.T., Dip. B.A. - Junior Technician

Julie-Anna is a Junior Architectural Technologist at the firm. At a young age, she discovered a love for art and design and after traveling around Europe, she decided to pursue a career in Architecture. She graduated from SAIT’s Architectural Technologies program. She has a passion for drafting and enjoys both the creative and technical aspect of architecture.


Xylene Tugade
Dip. A.T., B.S. Arch. - Junior Technician


Born and raised in the Philippines, Xylene found excitement in designing buildings at a young age and eventually wanted to pursue this in life. She graduated from Far Eastern University with a degree in Architecture, and after coming to Canada, she took on to study at SAIT and graduated to be an Architectural Technologist. Xylene continues to have passion on both artistry and technicality of architecture and these helped her develop the long career ahead.


Dana Johnson
Dip. A.T. - Junior Technician

Dana brings 10 years of practical experience building wood framed stairs, walls and both floor and roof trusses as well as 5-6 years as an EWP (Engineered wood product) designer for floors and walls.  After his time in the construction industry, he felt he was in need of a bigger challenge.  Graduating as an Architectural Technologist has taken his passion for art, architecture, and construction experience to a whole new level. This has allowed him to use his passions and experience together on a daily basis to work in a new field and create art of a different kind.


Noreen Kumlin
Dip. Bus. Admin - Executive Team, Business Manager

Noreen is part of our executive team and is responsible for the financial affairs of the firm.  She has been working in the accounting field for many years, and specifically in the architecture industry since 1998.  She spent her first 17 years in the industry doing the books for our predecessor firm, William R. Kumlin Architect Ltd.  Prior to that, she worked in Payroll at the City of Calgary, Continuing Education at the University of Manitoba, and with several private accounting firms.   Her SAIT Diploma in Business Administration has given her the background in business accounting necessary for the complex aspects of keeping the company’s books.  As a member of the executive team, she contributes her knowledge and professional firm expertise to the day to day operations of the firm. Noreen worked from home while her children were growing up which enabled her to volunteer in numerous capacities for her children’s schools, and for her community. 


Brenda Mork
LEEDTM Green Associate - Administration

Brenda is part of Kumlin Sullivan Architecture Studio’s administrative team along with being a key member to our contract administration group.  Brenda brings over 10 years of experience of architectural office experience in Calgary and we are happy to have her as part of our administration team.  Brenda brings with a wealth of construction administration experience and has dealt with many of the major engineering firms in Alberta.   Some of Brenda’s recent projects include Evanston Towne Centre and Tribal Whirlpool Warehouse.
