The Royal Hotel

Fernie, BC

Reviving a beloved Fernie landmark, the Royal Hotel project recasts the heritage brick hostelry as a boutique alpine retreat and community hub. The design restores the 1908 façade’s character-defining elements, while reinvigorating the interior, creating contemporary guest suites, a trendy lounge for visitors and locals alike, conference facilities and amenities, including a skiier’s lounge. A modern penthouse perches over top of the historic, three-storey brick building, housing generous executive-style suites, complete with patios that are setback from the original cornices, and enjoying views of the Elk Valley surroundings. In an effort to retain as much of the original floor structure and exterior walls, a new structural system and foundation system is being carefully introduced to meet seismic requirements, which requires suitable bracing of these elements during construction. By pairing sensitive conservation with modern hospitality standards, the Royal Hotel can once again anchor Fernie’s downtown, welcoming visitors and locals alike to gather, rest, and celebrate the town’s storied mountain culture.
