Suncor Energy Centre Redevelopment
Calgary, AB
The Suncor Energy Centre (SEC) redevelopment in downtown Calgary represents a visionary reimagining of one of the city’s most iconic office complexes. Originally completed in 1984, the project transforms the space between the two red granite towers into a vibrant, collaborative urban hub. By incorporating natural materials and opening up the area in all four cardinal directions, the design creates an inviting, tree-filled “forum” that serves as the heart of the complex. With reimagined tower entrances, new vertical circulation elements, and a variety of pathways through the forum, the design enhances movement and connectivity across the city block. The atrium is re-envisioned as a green, multi-functional space, blending Indigenous design elements with forest-like surroundings and offering diverse seating for both informal gatherings and cultural events. This new forested urban space will act as a dynamic, four-season destination for the public while enriching the work environment. The introduction of a food market hall and a mobility hub dedicated to cyclists further elevates the SEC as a place that promotes sustainability, health, and community engagement, ensuring it becomes a distinguished new landmark in Calgary's evolving urban landscape.
