Wurst Restaurant

Calgary, AB

The Gasthaus Building project demonstrates how strategic reinvestment can revitalize aging commercial assets. Located on 4th Street SW, the once-vacant landmark underwent a complete interior demolition and full site modernization to meet current retail and hospitality demands. The redevelopment included reconfiguring the parking lot, enhancing street-front visibility, and introducing new lease spaces for a restaurant and two retail tenants.

A key design focus was balancing commercial viability with architectural character. The south half of the building now houses the ‘Wurst’ restaurant and bar, while the north portion accommodates a café and a salon. New glazing along the north façade and careful restoration of original detailing—including wood brackets and brickwork—enhanced both usability and curb appeal. The retention of the iconic pylon sign preserved a familiar community marker, reinforcing the project’s commercial and cultural relevance.

This successful transformation repositioned a deteriorated structure into a vibrant mixed-use destination that actively contributes to the street's economic and social vitality.
